Steward Your Resources Well

I shared a post in August last year after a reflective moment I had whilst doing my usual chores around the house. That thought and reflection has since been the topic of multiple different conversations and messages of encouragement and exhortation I have had.

Steward your resources well.

While we wait for that next opportunity or the “big break,” it’s easy to sit back and do nothing with the resources we already have. It’s easy to gloss over how much could be done with our current resources and to feel like we don’t have enough to make enough impact and create enough change.

Your resources might be your time, money, skills or gifts. Sometimes, when coming from a position of lack, we want to hoard and preserve all our resources for fear of losing what “little” we have. Scarcity mindset is a term you may have heard of which links well with this thought (read more on scarcity mindset here and here)

In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25), the master rewards his workers who invested the talents they were given to produce more. I believe we'll receive a good return when we invest even the “little” resources we have – because even a little can multiply into much!

“To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.”

It’s important that we wait well in these in-between moments so that we are prepared for what is next. Stewarding your resources well (while you wait for your next breakthrough) can look like voluntarily using your skills to support a local community, working diligently at work even if you aren’t where you aim to be career-wise or being generous to those around you with your time and/or money.

Each of us has been entrusted with something. The question is: will we put it to use, or bury it away?

If you are finding it difficult to wait well because you are seeing things through the perspective of lack and scarcity, there are a few things you could practically do to change your perspective and feel more hopeful.

You could see this time as a time of preparation and building yourself up for the next opportunity. YouTube and Google are storehouses of learning opportunities to improve your skills and expand your knowledge in your area of expertise. At work, you may have a learning platform which will have loads of different courses you can take to build on your professional development. It could even be as simple as following someone inspirational on social media who encourages you to do and be better every day.

The next thing you could do (and I will always encourage) is to practice gratitude! It is so important to practice gratitude, and I strongly believe it is one of the easiest ways to shift your perspective to seeing the glass half full. It’s such an overlooked habit, but if there’s one thing you take from this, please let it be to adopt an attitude of gratitude every day.

The final thing, which I spoke about in my last blog post, is to take time to reflect on your accomplishments (read it here). Again, this helps shift your perspective, and it also helps you to realign your focus as it reminds you WHY you do what you do, WHY you want more for yourself and WHY you are or should choose to remain hopeful and not give up on your goals.
